As often as the manual says, at the session length it sets, and no more. For most home masks that means a short session on a set number of days a week, rather than long or repeated sessions. For the Folliqen LED Mask it is once a day, 10 minutes at a time.
The short answer, by situation
| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| Your first week | The standard session at the frequency in the manual. There is no need to build up or to go longer. |
| An established routine | The same days each week, at the same point in your evening or morning. |
| You missed a few days | Pick up the usual schedule. Do not double up to catch up. |
| You want to see a change sooner | Keep to the schedule. A longer or extra session is not a faster route; it is outside what the mask was designed for. |
| Travelling | Take it in your cabin bag if it has a battery, or skip the week and pick up the schedule when you are back. |
| Irritated, broken or sunburnt skin | Skip sessions until it has settled. |
Why longer or more often is not better
The amount of light a session delivers is the brightness of the LEDs multiplied by the time they are on. The manufacturer sets the session length for that particular mask's LEDs, at that particular distance from the skin. A different mask with different LEDs will have a different number, which is why session lengths vary from a few minutes to around twenty across the category.
Going past the set length changes the amount of light, not the quality of the session. It also means more time with bright light close to closed eyes and more warmth on the skin, and neither of those is useful. The auto-off timer is there so the session ends where it is meant to without you watching the clock. On this mask, that is after the time you set (10, 20 or 30 minutes).
Running two modes back to back is the same thing in a different form. If you want to use more than one mode, use them on different days, and keep the weekly total to what the manual states. The mode guide covers which mode to start with.
Consistency over weeks
Any change in how skin looks from a routine like this builds slowly with regular use, if it comes at all, and it varies from person to person. Some people notice little. We do not give a timeline, because we cannot back one.
What we can say is that a routine you keep for weeks is the only fair test of whether it suits you. A burst of daily sessions followed by a month off tells you very little. A steady schedule, kept long enough to form a view, tells you much more. If you buy the Folliqen LED Mask, the 30-day guarantee is a sensible window: use it on schedule for most of that time before deciding.
A schedule that is easy to keep
The routines that fail are the ones that depend on remembering. The one below depends on habit.
- Pick a fixed slot. Straight after you cleanse in the evening works for most people, because the face is already bare and there is no sunscreen to remove. The full order is in where an LED mask fits in your routine.
- Pick fixed days. The same days every week, matching the frequency in the manual. Fixed days are easier to keep than "whenever I remember".
- Keep the mask where you will use it. Charged, with the eye protection next to it. A mask in a drawer in another room is a mask that stops being used.
- Sit or lie still. 10 minutes with your eyes closed. Not while cooking, walking or doing anything else that needs your eyes.
- Keep a simple log. A tick on a calendar is enough. After a few weeks it tells you whether you have actually kept to the schedule, which is the first thing to check before judging any routine.
When to skip a session
- Your skin is irritated, broken or sunburnt.
- You have had an in-clinic procedure, such as a peel or laser, and the clinic has not yet said light exposure is fine.
- You have started a new medication. Some medicines increase sensitivity to light, including some retinoid medicines and some antibiotics. The leaflet usually says so; if unsure, ask a pharmacist.
- You have a headache, eye strain or feel unwell.
- You have become pregnant. Ask your doctor before continuing.
The full list of who should ask a doctor before starting, and when to stop, is on the safety page. Eye protection applies to every session, whatever the schedule; LED mask eye safety explains why.
Morning or evening?
Either works. Evening is usually easier, because you have already removed makeup and sunscreen, and you are more likely to have 10 minutes to sit still. If you use the mask in the morning, cleanse first, use the mask on bare skin, then apply your usual products and finish with sunscreen. The mask is not sun protection, and the sunscreen step does not change.
What matters more than the time of day is that it is the same time of day. A slot you keep beats a better slot you skip.
Questions people actually ask
Can I use it every day?
Only if the manual says so. Follow the stated frequency: for this mask, once a day. If you want to use the mask more, the answer is to keep using it for longer, over more weeks, not more often within a week.
Can I do two sessions in a row with different modes?
No. One mode per session, at the set length. Use a second mode on a different day if you want to, keeping to the weekly total. What the colours on an LED mask are for explains the modes.
What happens if I stop for a few weeks?
Nothing harmful. Pick up the usual schedule when you are ready, at the usual length. There is no catch-up session and no need for one.
